Read and annotate the excerpt from Mandela's autobiography, Long Walk to Freedom.
As you annotate, underline EVERY instance of the words "free" or "freedom."
Highlight a sentence with "free" or "freedom" in it that you find the most impactful. Make it a sentence that you think really stands out.
In a circle, each student reads his/her highlighted sentence. What words and ideas did we hear again and again? Why?
Writing
Look at a sample chunk from last time. Look at the highlighting on your chunk. What could you do to improve your analytical writing?
On a half sheet of paper, write a chunk. Focus on DIDLS and how his writing choices work to achieve purpose.
